I used to do a lot of conservation and environmental planning work at Madikwe Game Reserve in the North-West of South Africa, close to Botswana. This photograph of a lioness was captured one morning when we were out surveying a proposed lodge development site. When we got into the jeep to move to another site we came across a small pride of lions resting up not very far from where we had been and were most grateful we had not walked into them, especially as she was standing alert and ready to get on the move!
