Himba Maiden
I met this young woman while I was doing community conservation planning work in the Kunene Region of far North Namibian. Namibia. Her headdress indicates that she is unmarried. The late afternoon light showed off the ochre and cow fat that she had rubbed into her skin for protection. The Himba are nomadic pastoralists in this arid land a matriarchal society. Jewellery such as the large cowrie shell necklace she is wearing are passed down through the generations.
