Homeless in Old Delhi, India
We encountered this beggar in Old Delhi. My friend Blade, a member of the Khomani San community whom I worked with in South Africa and who was with me on the study tour, gave him some money. Blade could not believe that there were people who were worse off than those in his own impoverished community. The man posed for a photo and then crossed the square away from us before finally looking down at the note in his hand. He could not believe how much he had been given, used to receiving only scraps, and as he turned in astonishment we caught eyes across the square and we all smiled and waved at each other, our hearts lighting up in a moment of love and fellowship.
