Ouma Khuna
Ouma Khuna was one of the elders of the Khomani San (Northern Cape, South Africa) and was also one of the last !Nu language speakers who was intent on transferring her knowledge to the youngsters in the community. The afternoon light and shadow on her furrowed face show a long life of both hardship and joy. She also had a vast knowledge of plants and their uses and was intent on teaching these to the children, until missionaries to the area convinced her that herbal medicine is the work of the devil.
