I did a lot of conservation and environmental planning work at Madikwe Game Reserve in the North-West of South Africa, close to Botswana. This photograph of a young male with an emerging mane was captured one morning when we were out surveying a proposed lodge development site. When we got into the jeep to move to another site we came across a small pride of lions resting up not very far from where we had been and were most grateful we had not walked into them!
